Client Brief
We worked with contractors Gilbert-Ash, who had been tasked to carry out an extensive refurbishment of the Gallery, including a new entrance, retail and catering facilities, and a redisplay of the Gallery’s collection.
Project Work
We started the project by lifting up the National Portrait Gallery’s intricate timber parquet flooring so other contractors could work around the building. The flooring was labelled so it could be installed in exactly the same position.
Our team then got to work repairing the flooring, removing decades of chips, scratches, and scuffs. After completing the work, we re-laid the parquet flooring, installing a raised timber floor structure to improve air circulation.
We also installed new timber flooring across designated gallery spaces and feature stair cladding.
Summary
As the works took place in a Grade I listed building, it was essential to not only preserve the opulence and charm of the building but also work within stringent planning regulations.
